Do French regions matter? Climate Change

Retiring? Emigrating? Investing? Buying a holiday home? If you’re thinking of France, there are several considerations you should think of. The region you pick can also make a difference. Bear in mind that the regions in France are considerably larger than in the British countries. Also, the landscape, community and climate can vary across the country. Never assume that once you’ve seen one region, you’ve seen it all. Jo-ann Hodgson of World of Property suggests not to be fixated with one region and overlook another prospect that may offer similar variables, cost and convenience. There’s always the chance of coming across the exact opposite of what you have in mind right next door to your perfect French abode. However, whatever it is you are looking for, you will surely find it in one of France’s 26 diverse regions.

According to Hodgson, climate is always a major consideration. “There can’t be much incentive for the French to travel beyond their own country boundaries for a holiday when they have everything except Scandinavian and polar climate to hand,” says Michael Kingdom-Hockings, a resident of the Limousin region. He moved to France in 2004. “If you are emigrating for a change in climate, you should study regional climatic history carefully and travel to your chosen region in winter.”

Although the weather in France is generally better compared to that in Britain, remember that there can be considerable variations from one region to the other and even within the regions due to the county’s unique geography. In the Provence/Cote d’Azur region for instance, the weather is 50 per cent more sunny than Normandy, Brittany and the Western Loire – which in turn has twice as many rainy days as the south-east.
