Southern Italy proving popular

Rural Italy is proving to be more and more popular with property buyers from Britain as low prices combined with a strong pound make the country more attractive. Calabria is generating a lot of interest in particular. Nestled at the Southern end of Italy, Calabria is enjoying attention for its affordable property prices. “The attraction of Calabria in Italy’s market is cheap prices,” confirms a representative from the Association of International Property Professionals (AIPP).

Calabria is just to the south of Naples and home to around two million people. It is a place of rich contrasts. Some areas are mountainous and suffer below-freezing temperatures during the winters. On other parts of the region, citizens enjoy stretches of beaches and sunny temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius during the summers. Calabria is also loved for its vineyards since the time of the ancient Greeks.

Part of the charm of Calabria is the fact that it has been left unmarred by over-development the way other Italian beachfronts have been spoilt. Adding to the charm is the region’s history. Reggio Calabria is the oldest city in the region. It was founded more than 3,000 years ago. Remembrances of the past are now in display in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia.

The Greek museum is home to the Riace Warriors, a pair of full-sized bronze statues of Greek warriors that are said to have been lost in a shipwreck off the Calabrian coast. Almost a decade was dedicated to restore the artifacts discovered by a student diving off the coast in 1972. Aside from these statues, Calabria is also drawing in tourists with the ancient castles, temples and a national park. Calabria also boasts of several archaeological sites that are currently being excavated.

Easily accessible, Calabria is served by transport links with three international airports and a number of seaports that bring a steady stream of visitors to the region for most part of the year. One of these seaports is the second-busiest in the Mediterranean.

The property market in Calabria is looking good. It offers competitive prices to British buyers. According to the AIPP, there is not “anything particularly difficult” about buying in the area although it is advised to hire the services of a local, independent lawyer.
