New Town Planning Force for Spain
Spain’s Guardia Civil (Civil Guard) is goint to create a new 200-strong task force to combat illegal construction, abuses of town planning, and property-related corruption.
Joan Mesquida, director-general of the Guardia Civil, disclosed the plans to the leading national daily El Pais, saying that cases such as the ongoing scandal in Marbella required much more forceful and coordinated action than the previous attempts and initiations.
The new department, which will be divided into 54 separate teams, will be initially stationed in Madrid, Malaga, and Murcia provinces, where the majority of property-related corruption occurs. This is according to press reports.
The projects comes after the earlier creation of two-dozen new “property prosecutors”. The combined efforts of the new police and judicial forces will first be directed towards the creation of a comprehensive list of illegal buildings constructed in the country over the last three years, according to the local Costa Blanca news.
