Settling in Turkey
Thinking of settling in Turkey? Especially during retirement age? Here are some guidelines to help one settle in easily.
First is securing a residence visa and submitting all pertinent documents to the Turkish Consulate. Submission of all requirements should be accomplished eight weeks before departure time. However, it would be better to check the exact deadline of the requirements in one’s locality.
After arriving in Turkey, head to the nearest local police to secure a residence permit. This should be done a month within arrival. Extending the residence permit is allowable for as long as this is done way before the expiration date with the same local police office.
For as long as one holds a resident’s permit, the entrance and transfer of personal items is possible. Personal items include household goods, office furniture, pets and cars. However, cars will not be allowed unless work or retirement permits are submitted to the Customs office for processing.
For household items and office furniture, these can be brought into Turkey via a system called ‘Temporary Import’. Available payment systems for the transfer are the following: a deposit, which will be returned once settling back to one’s home country, and submitting a bank guarantee. The latter is a letter from either a Turkish or international bank which ensures that all relevant taxes and duties are paid if the furniture will remain in Turkey for a duration of 5 years or more.
As for pets, these have to be in health and have been completely vaccinated. The vaccination certificates should be on hand when the transfer is being made. However, there are limits to the number of animals to be brought into Turkey. The resident should subscribe to bring either one of the following: cat, dog or bird. For fishes, the most number is ten.
As mentioned earlier, cars can be brought into Turkey with the necessary work or retirement papers and registration documents. However, processing the permit to bring in personal cars can be quite tedious. More tedious than transferring furniture and pets. It is recommended that a car be purchased instead within the locality of Turkey.
