TURKISH ISLAND GOES ON SALE
The 800,000-square-metre Rabbit Island in Turkey’s Maarmara region has gone on sale. The island boasts of historic ruins dating back over a thousand years and offers spectacular diving opportunities, including numerous sunken wrecks and ruins and crystal-clear water. It is being offered for $10 million (£5.1 million) by its current owner, who wishes to remain anonymous.
The island represents a real challenge for those looking to develop, or indeed inhabit it. While the tourism potential of Rabbit Island (so named for the tens of thousands of bushy-tailed rodents which have made the island their home) is considered to be substantial. At present it has no infrastructure (and no connection points for electricity) and transport to and from the island is currently provided only by private boats. However, a large-scale investment could pay serious dividends.
Rabbit Island lies only one kilometre from Bozcaada, a short sail away from the Dardanelles and the Greek islands of Limnos and Lesbos, well-served by established cruise and yachting routes.
